Amazon Web Services has added a small but handy usability feature: Account color. You can assign a color to your AWS account so it’s easier to visually distinguish production, staging, development, client accounts, and more—reducing context switches and mistakes.
Where to find it
- Open the AWS Management Console and click your account menu (top-right).
- Choose Account.
- In Account display settings – new, find Account color (optional).
- Select a color and save.
Smart ways to use account colors
- Environment cues: Red for Production (high caution), Orange for Staging, Green for Development.
- Client/Project labeling: Assign unique colors per customer or project to cut down on “which account am I in?” mistakes.
- Org standardization: Adopt a shared palette so everyone on the team sees consistent visual signals.
- Account types: Teal for Shared Services, Dark Blue for Management/Org Payer, Light Blue for Sandboxes.
- Personal preference: Pick a color you instantly recognize to speed up navigation.
